THE ROUTE

Starting in historic and beautiful downtown Durango, riders will begin their journey climbing and traversing the La Plata Mountains. The route descends miles of single-track off the western slope of the La Plata’s and lands in Dolores. Through Dolores, riders will sample some fun single track in Cortez before winding through county roads to reach Mancos.

After Mancos, the route enters into a “desert segment”. Crossing the border into New Mexico, just north of Farmington, riders will sweat through many miles of sandy single-track and slickrock riding. This pinion and juniper high desert segment rolls back into Colorado through the town of Arboles.

Eastbound from Arboles the route follows the headwaters of the mighty San Juan River into Dulce, NM. Here the terrain changes back to high desert pine groves and rolling mesas. After a short highway push into Chama, the route climbs La Cumbre Pass and hops on the southbound Continental Divide Trail to El Rito.

The CDT section is a challenging and breathtaking segment of New Mexico high country riding. After arriving in El Rito, the route pushes east again, though the hot springs town of Ojo Caliente and Carson. Leaving Carson begins a long segment navigating the San Luis Valley along the historic Rio Grande River.

From the Rio Grande, riders will travel along the outskirts of Taos, passing though Questa, before pushing back across the border to San Luis, CO. The San Luis Valley will be a big push across long, straight, dirt roads before crossing the Rio Grande River at the historic El Vado Bridge and rolling into Antonito.

After Antonito, riders start a big climb along the Great Divide Mountain Biking Route to the mountain village of Platoro. Here, a big decent will lead riders into the hot springs town of Pagosa Springs, where riders begin the westward push back to Durango.

Winding county roads and rough ATV trail brings riders to Bayfield- with one more push across the Florida Mesa before descending back to Durango.

This is a completely self-supported ride. Tour Divide rules apply. There will be no services, aid or transportation provided to riders. You are on your own!

INTRODUCING the New Colo Lite, new for 2024

This a 450+ mile abbreviated version of The New Colo experience

The New Colo Lite starts at the same time and follows the same route until mile 392, where the full route continues east and the “lite route” stays north on HWY 151. From there, lite quickly rejoins the final 60 miles of the full route back to the finish in Durango, CO.

    • Riders can start in either category, and are free to switch sides mid-event.
    • If you signed up for the full route but the first few hundred miles beat you down, you can still complete the New Colo lite with your head held high!
    • If you signed up for the lite, but in Arboles CO, you find yourself feeling strong and hungry for more, you can boldly push east to attempt the full route.

The goal is to grow the starting field of riders for The New Colo and to offer a flexible pathway for riders curious about the New Colo experience, without the commitment of the full New Colo route.
